I have found that certain aspects of home decorating go unchallenged. So many people have difficulty knowing what to do with small corners in their homes. These spaces are easy “catch-alls” for junk. They are often not utilized to their best advantage.

There are a number of easy solutions to remedy these awkward nooks & crannies.  It’s helpful to think about these areas in terms of “storage.” What could you use in these spots, in a decorative fashion, to create additional storage for items such as books, dish ware, paperwork, or even shoes or clothing?

For example, in the front hall of my own home, I’ve used a charming hand painted chest as a bar. I’ve owned this chest for years. It used to be my linen closet/chest. Now it houses our liquor bottles & all of the accouterments that go with a bar. On the top of the chest, I added a petite Asian style lamp & a box to house extra keys. Hanging above the chest is an original painting on silk, by yours truly. On the floor next to the chest is a low light live plant on a stand & a few other works of art (not by yours truly.) Voila…this is all that is needed to complete the vignette.! It’s simple and functional.

The small corner in our Living Room evolved rather quickly. Seating was the name of the game. I started with a large silver-toned ornate wall mirror that faces the large picture window at the front of the house and reflects the outside. I balanced the adjacent wall with a pair of artwork framed in gold (the lower piece is one of my original watercolors.) I spotted this fantastically comfortable rich navy blue arm chair in Pier 1 Imports. It has a little bit of everything…a button tufted back, a rolled back & arms, turned hardwood legs, & nailhead trim. As a table, I paired the chair with a navy ceramic garden seat, lamp on top…& now it’s the most popular spot in the room to cozy up with a good book…

So think outside the box, (or in it.)

Use items that you already own and rethink that odd corner to make it functional while making it something special.
